Borduren met de buren

Creating the biggest cross stitch work of art in Amsterdam connected more people than expected

More than 277 people stitched this embroidered work of art between April and June 2024. This created surprising connections between people who normally never meet.

“Draadje met een praatje” in Aalsmeer

In Aalsmeer, we’re creating a giant stitched artwork that celebrates both the town’s famous flowers and its deep-rooted sense of community.

Gerda was invited to design a project inspired by Aalsmeer’s floral history. During her research, she discovered something just as striking: the many people who have quietly and consistently given their time to local life. From volunteers at the historical gardens and flour mill to members of the stamp collectors club.

In response, she designed giant stitched flowers that not only reflect Aalsmeer’s botanical past, but also symbolise community spirit and local tradition.

We’re now stitching the artwork together with residents during events and festivals across Aalsmeer. Once finished, the final piece will be proudly displayed at the Flower Art Museum.

XL cross stitch stitching tour community art project Landkreis Leer

XL stitching tour in Landkreis Leer – Germany

An incredible cross stitch community project brought people together across Landkreis Leer in northwest Germany. Over 280 participants, including mayors and local residents, helped create a 12-meter stitched panorama celebrating the region’s landmarks and culture.

From museums to clinics to town halls, people of all ages joined in, many stitching for the very first time. The energy was so inspiring that an extra panel was added to include even more hands and stories.

The result is a joyful and colorful artwork that beautifully showcases the power of creativity to connect communities.

Connecting students and teachers at the UVA – Amsterdam

During the initiation week at the University of Amsterdam, the XL stitching project brought new students and teachers together in a joyful and creative way.

Two large abstract panels were created, symbolizing the beautiful diversity within the student community.

With soft colors and gentle, flowing shapes, the artworks reflect a sense of openness and connection. The energy during the stitching sessions was amazing, as hands from all backgrounds worked side by side.

The finished pieces now proudly hang in the university, serving as a lasting reminder of unity, creativity, and the start of something new.

Lighthouse Festival – The Hague

For two inspiring days, we brought the XL stitching project to life in the stunning atrium of De Haagse Hogeschool during the Lighthouse Festival.

This vibrant event invites students and staff to discover The Lighthouse, the university’s platform for debate and culture.

In the heart of the festival, we set up our stitching stations right on the central square, surrounded by energy, curiosity, and creativity.

Dozens of students joined in, each adding their own stitches to a colorful version of the Lighthouse logo.

Bit by bit, thread by thread, a beautiful symbol of connection and shared experience came to life. The result was a celebration of community and creativity within the university.

Threads of Being exposition – Brussels

We were thrilled to have two pieces from our community art projects featured in Mental Health Europe’s powerful exhibition “Threads of Being,” right in the diplomatic heart of Brussels.

This inspiring event, supported by the European Union among others, brought together leaders, policymakers, and art enthusiasts to explore how creativity can support mental health and well-being.

Our XL cross stitch project was proudly highlighted as a shining example of how art can bring people together. Its inclusive and welcoming spirit shows how simple acts of making can help individuals connect, share stories, and step beyond their everyday bubbles.

It was an honor to contribute to this important conversation at such a meaningful and impactful event.
