We connect communities through XL art projects
Using XL cross-stitch as an artistic medium, we co-create monumental artworks designed by Gerda Z. Leeffers. Her designs are rooted in anthropological research and symbolise the shared story that binds a community together.
These meaningful, collaborative art projects are made with and for the people who stitch them.
For everyone: ages 1 to 99
Our XL community art projects are simple and fun. Anyone can join, no matter your age or experience. Children, adults, and older people all take part. If you can hold a thread, you can join in.
We work in pairs. One person is the boss. He or she stand at the front of the mesh and give instructions. The other person is on the other side and follows.
It’s a playful exercise in communication and teamwork.
The process sparks great conversations, sometimes a bit of bickering, but always a lot of laughter and connection. This dynamic makes our projects not just about the final artwork, but about the shared experience of making something together.
We run community art projects everywhere with all kinds of people
We run community art projects in busy city neighbourhoods, quiet rural towns. We go outdoors to stitch on the street and in public spaces or we stitch indoors in private settings.
In Amsterdam, we made a giant mural with more than 277 neighbors, stitching on the street.
In rural Germany, we went on a stitching tour through 12 locations in Landkreis Leer — from family centers and addiction clinics to a ferry, a museum, and a town hall.
In Aalsmeer, we stitched at all types of local festivals to reach people with many different interests.
We also facilitate community projects within organisations
At different universities, we connected new students and teachers during the orientation week.
In companies, we can bring colleagues or customers together in team events.
